A.M Howell has created a work of mystery and intrigue in The House of One Hundred Clocks. Helena, her parrot Orbit and her Father, move to Cambridge so that he can take up a position as clock-winder to a wealthy patron. It seems like the well paid opportunity of a lifetime, that will allow them to set up their own business - but there's a catch and it's a big one.
The clocks can never be allowed to stop ticking or there will be serious consequences for Helena and her Father.
There are many mysteries to solve within the book, which leaves you wanting to turn yet another page to try and work them out. Who is leaving the strange notes around the house, why is there no furniture, and why do the winding keys keep disappearing - is someone trying to sabotage her Father's work and risk their future?
You will not be able to put this down as you become intertwined with the characters and their lives. The early 1900's setting with the ever present shadowy threat of the workhouse only adds to the atmosphere of the story, as you hope that Helena can work out what is going on in the mind of their eccentric employer before it is too late.
